Immutable Infrastructure: Rise of the Machine Images

12th of May 2017 in Iasi, Romania

The cloud is the new normal and it is time to rethink how we see machines and deployments. We have been piling layer upon layer of complexity for too long. But why should it be this way? It is time to radically simplify all this.

In this talk, we'll throw general-purpose operating systems, snowflake servers and runtime provisioning out the door. Instead you'll see how servers become disposable, how machine images are generated from scratch in seconds and how to achieve perfect environment parity from dev to prod.

This is Immutable Infrastructure. It is a profoundly important change as to how we view and treat our systems. We'll go deep. We'll look at how this affects scaling, logging, sessions, configuration, service discovery and more. We'll also look at how containers and machine images compare and why some things you took for granted may not be necessary anymore.

But beware, neither sacred cows nor kittens will be spared!

Presented by Axel Fontaine, Founder and CEO of Boxfuse

Here comes the Cloud! But is your architecture ready for it?

23th of November 2016 in Oslo, Norway

The case for running your own datacenter is vanishing rapidly. The cloud seduces with a low barrier of entry and full flexibility. Infrastructure can be spun up almost instantly in a fully automated way through an API. All this with no upfront costs and the ability to decommission it just as fast. But what does this mean for our applications and their architecture? Can we just lift and shift them to the cloud?

Everything comes at a price. To be able to fully leverage the potential of the cloud, new challenges must be mastered: from data privacy and security to cost-based architectures, dynamic provisioning, service discovery and efficient deployment models.

This talk provides architects and developers clear answers and battle-tested solutions for a successful journey to infrastructure heaven.

20th of April 2016 in Mainz, Germany

Immutable Infrastructure: kiss your pets goodbye, here comes the cattle!

3rd December 2015 in Berlin, Germany

App deployment and server setup are complex, error-prone and time-consuming. They require OS installers, package managers, configuration recipes, install and deployment scripts, server tuning, hardening and more. But... Is this really necessary? Are we trapped in a mindset of doing things this way just because that's how they've always done?

What if we could start over and radically simplify all this? What if, within seconds we could not configure, but instead generate a minimal machine tailor-made for our application? What if this machine could then be transported and run unchanged on our laptop and in the cloud?

This talk is for developers and architects wishing to radically improve and simplify how they deploy their applications. It takes Continuous Delivery to a level far beyond what you've seen today. Welcome to Immutable Infrastructure. This is the new black.

We'll go deep. We'll not only look at why Immutable Infrastructure is profoundly important, but also at how this affects scaling, logging, sessions, configuration, service discovery and more. But beware, sacred cows (and kittens) will not be spared!

4th November 2015 in München, Germany

2nd September 2015 in Kassel, Germany
